Welcome
We would like to welcome you to St. John’s United Methodist Church located on Proctor Road in Sarasota, Florida. Under normal circumstances we have three worship services on Sunday mornings – two Traditional and one Contemporary. However, until further notice we will be worshipping online or via video.
At this time we are in constant prayer for those affected by the COVID-19 illness, and have canceled all church and community programming on our campus until further notice.

On Solid Ground We Stand

A Lenten greeting to you and yours! As we embark on this reflective season of the year, I pray you are well. A recent conversation with a friend has remained with me for a few weeks now and serves as the predominant thought for this reflection. At some point during the course of the conversation, our dialogue turned from casual to theological. The tone turned a bit more serious, the mood more reserved. In essence, I was stirred to think about the core beliefs of my faith. Yes, what do I believe?
If a friend or a co-worker asked you to share about essentials beliefs in your faith, how would you respond? For centuries Christianity’s beliefs’ have been challenged, and in some instances, threatened. Times of oppression have forced believers throughout the ages to deeply consider the tenets of the faith and to understand them. In my opinion, this is not bad at all; in fact, I think it calls for us to remain committed and steadfast in our faith. The apostle Paul warned the various faith communities he ministered to about the dangers of compromising one’s beliefs. In one instance he exhorted the church at Thessalonica to “examine all things and to hold on to what is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21) At that time in history, many had risen professing to have “absolute truth”, only to be proven mistaken and misleading in their thinking.
Today, the Church is under similar attacks. If there is ever a time when we need to know where we stand as the people of God, I strongly believe it is NOW! Thankfully, we benefit from the lives and testimonies of a great cloud of witnesses. Many have come before and gracefully paved the way of our faith. They have availed us of tools to be utilized in the defense on our faith. The Word of God remains the central source of truth and authority. In addition, the Church has composed, over many centuries, documents that attest to the truth of God. One such document is what we have always known and professed as the Apostles’ Creed. I am certain you have said it once or twice while in church. Well, we are about to start a 10-week series titled “iBelieve: The Apostles’ Creed.” Join us as we consider together what it means to “believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.” This will be our focus for Lent and I trust that it will be a time of renewal and refreshment in our faith. Be encouraged: on solid ground we stand!
I pray that the great I AM will meet you and yours in new and profound ways over the next few weeks as we march toward the resurrection. He’s alive. He’s alive indeed!
Serving All, Following One,
Pastor Jaime
